One advantage of being an English teacher is having an excuse to read and reread some great stories.

I’ve really enjoyed re-reading “The Old Demon”, by Pearl Buck, along with other stories I read when I was in 7th and 8th grades.  I particularly like the Buck’s description of the funny yet strong old Chinese woman, Mrs. Wang’s, “encounter” with the river as she opens its gates in order to drown an approaching Japanese army.

“then she felt [the river] seize her and lift her up to the sky.  I t was beneath her and around her.  It rolled her joyfully hither and thither, and then, holding her close and enfolded, it went rushing against the enemy”

This completely describes how I feel about body surfing, minus the dying and the killing thousands of my enemies part. I love being wrapped in furiously powerful currents of water, preferably without dying ;)
